Next Kids Size Chart: Single Sizes, Dual Sizes & Plus

Next is one of the most popular children's clothing brands in the UK — and one of the most confusing to size for. This guide covers single sizes, dual sizes, Slim, Plus, shoes, and how Next compares to H&M, Zara, Tu and Tesco F&F.

April 202614 min readSize GuideFree Size Finder Below

Next actually operates two parallel sizing systems sold side by side: single-year sizes (3, 4, 5, 6...) and dual-year sizes (3-4, 5-6, 7-8...). Most parents don't know both exist, and the difference matters when you're buying online.

We verified Next measurements against official size charts and ran them through a Monte Carlo simulation of 1,000 children to establish where Next sits relative to other major UK brands.

The short answer: Next runs essentially average — right in line with UK sizing norms. The single and dual sizes aren't interchangeable; they're designed for different body shapes within the same height range. Extended sizing (Slim and Plus) is available from age 3 and is one of the best ranges of any UK brand.

Does Next Run Big or Small?

We compared Next's measurements against a Monte Carlo simulation of 1,000 children across four age bands. The finding is clear: Next sits squarely at the cross-brand average for chest, waist and hip across all height bands.

Single Sizes vs Dual Sizes: What's the Difference?

Single sizes (3, 4, 5, 6...) — each covers approximately one year's growth, with a fixed single measurement for each dimension. The more precise fit option.

Dual sizes (3-4, 5-6, 7-8...) — each spans two years, with a range of measurements. Designed for children growing through the transition between two single sizes.

The dual sizes are not simply larger versions of the single sizes. The dual size 7-8 covers exactly the measurement range from single size 7 to single size 8 — making it the right choice for a child who sits between the two.

Example: A boy at 122cm with a 58cm chest fits both single size 7 (chest 63cm) and dual size 7-8 (chest 63–67cm). But a boy at 125cm with a 65cm chest fits dual size 7-8 more precisely than either single size 7 (63cm, too tight) or single size 8 (67cm, slightly loose).

Next Extended Sizing: Slim and Plus

Next offers one of the broadest extended sizing ranges of any UK children's brand, with Slim and Plus available from size 3 through size 16. Most UK brands either don't offer extended sizing at all or start it from size 7 or 8.

For boys, the differentiator is waist. At size 5, standard waist is 55cm, Slim is 50cm and Plus is 60cm — a 10cm spread across the three fits.

Girls extended sizing works differently. Next Girls Slim uses hip measurement as the primary differentiator rather than waist — making it the only major UK brand to do this. Girls Plus uses both waist and hip.

Which fit is right? If your child's waist measurement falls more than 2–3cm below standard for their height, try Slim. If more than 2–3cm above, try Plus. For girls, check hip against the Girls Slim hip column.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Next run big or small?

Next runs average — right in line with the UK cross-brand norm. Our Monte Carlo simulation of 1,000 children found no evidence of Next running consistently generous or slim in chest, waist or hip at any age. A Next size 5 fits a child at the same measurement as an H&M 110–116 or a Tu 5-6Y.

What is the difference between Next single sizes and dual sizes?

Single sizes (3, 4, 5...) have fixed measurements for one year’s growth. Dual sizes (3-4, 5-6, 7-8...) have a range of measurements spanning two adjacent single sizes. The dual size is ideal for a child whose measurements fall between two single sizes — not larger or roomier, just covering the middle ground.

When should I choose Slim or Plus at Next?

Choose Slim if your child’s waist (boys) or hip (girls) measures more than 2–3cm below the standard measurement for their height. Choose Plus if they measure more than 2–3cm above. Both are available from size 3 through 16.

What age does size 3 fit at Next?

Next size 3 covers 95–101cm height with a waist of 53cm and hip of 58cm. Most children reach 95cm around age 3, though height varies significantly — always use actual height.

How does Next sizing compare to H&M?

At 112cm, Next size 5 (waist 55cm, hip 62cm) and H&M size 116 (waist 54cm, hip 60cm) are within 1–2cm on both measurements. Both brands sit at the UK average — a child who fits H&M 116 will almost certainly fit Next 5.
